Mike has been invited by Latin Jazz pianist Alex Wilson to do two Afro-Cuban flavoured shows at the Pizza Express Dean St, Soho, London, on Friday 26th September. They will be accompanied by Davide Mantovani on bass, and Edwin Sanz on percussion. Mike and Alex got together at his home in Zurich earlier this year (whilst he was playing there with the Thriller Live tour), and they have concocted some original Afro Cuban arrangements on Mike’s compositions, both solo & Level 42. It promises to be a unique evening, and if you are free Mike would love you to come “as it gives me a chance to express the Latin side of me”
There will be an early and a late show, ideal for those of you who are working that evening.

Mike will be heading off on tour this October/November with Level 42 on the Sirens Tour. The band will be featuring songs from the Sirens EP released late last year, with a 3-piece brass section on stage, Dan Carpenter (Trumpet) and Nicol Thomson (Trombone) augmenting Sean Freeman on Saxes. “The music on the Sirens EP took us back to our jazz funk roots,” says Mike, “and to the days of club DJ’s championing home grown bands, so its going to be fun playing this stuff alongside the hits that came later on.”
The band will be touring the UK, Holland, Germany & Italy from October 4th for 6 weeks. See Appearances for the full listing.
Mike will be playing festivals and touring with Level 42 this year, starting in March at the prestigious Cape Town International Jazz Festival, in May the Retro Fest in Luzern, Switzerland, in June at Let’s Rock Bristol, with more festival dates to be confirmed shortly. Later in the year in October/November Level 42 will be playing the UK & Europe with the eagerly awaited Sirens Tour. “The Sirens EP has had so much fantastic feedback,” says Mike, “it will be great to play it as part of a full show, I’m really looking forward to it.”
Mike is currently on tour with the Thriller Live show, which has been wowing audiences all over the UK and now Europe with the music of Michael and the Jackson Five. “I love playing this show, its such a privilege as a musician to step into the musical world of Michael Jackson, and to be recreating the genius of Quincy Jones, playing an inspiring range of all-time classic songs, with a brilliant cast of singers and dancers”. The tour is set to continue into July.
….and to celebrate the end to a mostly wonderful year, I will be performing a special show at the 606 Club next Wednesday, 11th December with my friends Phil Gould, Yolanda Charles, and to fill the shoes of the absent Alex Hutchings, I will have not one, but two great guitarists, Paul Stacey and Sam Grimley.
We will be joined during the show by Sumudu Jayatilaka and Diana Winter as guest vocalists. So expect a heady mix of funk, soul, groove, gospel and xmas carols during what I promise will be a great night – book yourself a place here.
I look forward to seeing you x
Following the successes earlier this year at Ronnie Scott’s and at The 606 Club, Mike returns with his band of (very gifted) friends: Phil Gould (Drums), Yolanda Charles (Bass) and Alex Hutchings (Guitars). He will be playing 2 London dates, at Ronnie Scott’s on Sunday October 13th, and at The Pheasantry on Thursday October 17th. The third date is at The Music Room, Maidstone, on Friday October 18th.
He will be playing a mixture of solo material (from his One The One EP and Changes CD), some funky covers, and new material, including “Hiroshima“, fresh from its successful debut last month. Says Mike “I’ve been enjoying busy year so far (see below), so it’s great to be playing with Phil again, and Yolanda and Alex are such superb musicians, with them the show becomes a real occasion.”
This year Mike has been playing Festivals with Level 42, making regular appearances in town on Thriller Live and Let It Be. Coming up are Level 42’s Victorious Festival in Portsmouth next week, playing with Dominic Miller in Italy, and then again with Level 42’s two shows at London’s IndigO2 in September, followed by a Thriller Live Tour.
